APPLY FOR YOUR OWN NIF REMOTELY VIA BORDR.COM
If you’re reading this article, chances are that you’ve decided that you want to apply for the D7 Visa without the assistance of a Portuguese immigration professional (good luck!).
A word of caution…
While applying for the D7 independently means that you are going to have to do a lot more of the heavy lifting yourself, it is possible to do it on your own. But what you are going to save in service fees, you are going to be “paying” in unavoidable service fees, countless man hours and, likely, a lot of frustrations, delays, false starts and emotional costs.
It also means that you may run into obstacles sequencing your travel plans, the validity of your police clearance, your rental contract and your SEF appointment, but it is theoretically possible to get your independent application approved.
However, if, for whatever reason, your initial application is rejected – either due to technical document non-compliance or something more substantial – you can expect this to become an even longer and more time consuming process, and your overall chances of success will most likely be diminished…
But without further ado, let’s get into how you can remotely obtain your Portuguese tax number, or NIF, remotely.
As an added bonus, we provide a discount coupon code with which you can save 10% on the service fees for your NIF application.
What is the Portuguese NIF?
The NIF is your Portuguese tax number, or Número de Identificação Fiscal in Portuguese. The NIF is a nine-digit tax number which you’ll use to make for certain payments in Portugal.
What is the NIF used for?
You’ll require a NIF to open a Portuguese bank account, buy a property or to apply for municipal services, apply for credit or a mobile phone contract, apply for a drivers license, get an internet connection at home, pay taxes, etc.
And you can apply for yours remotely via Bordr.com here.
It will also be included on your Portuguese ID card.
Using your NIF for certain transactions also means getting some of your taxes back. (The Portuguese revenue authorities use the NIF to track consumer spending and prevent companies from dodging taxes.)
How can I apply for the Portugal NIF online, remotely?
If you are already in Portugal, you can obtain a NIF number yourself, by visiting a Finanças branch office, if you’re a non-EU citizen.
(EU citizens can apply for an NIF online.)
If, however, you’re staying abroad, you’ll have to get the assistance of a Portuguese national to assist you.
You could ask a friend in Portugal to do this, but bear in mind that they’ll then have to serve as your Portuguese tax representative until such time as you arrive and settle in Portugal.
It is therefore advisable to us a company for this service – more on our preferred service provider below…
Border.io (NOT Border.io) is a company specializing in helping non-EU nationals with remote NIF applications and remote bank account opening in Portugal.
There are a number of other suppliers to consider for this, however Bordr.io offers a competitive and very fair price point ($150), a streamlined service, great customer support – and results within as little as 3 business days.
What’s more, if you use the discount code D7VISA, you’ll also get $10 off your fees (making the total cost $140).
This includes 12 months of professional tax representation while you get settled in the country.
We highly recommend Bordr.com for NIF applications, but don’t just take our word for it; you can check out their 400+ 5-star reviews on TrustPilot here.
